The start of this 5-day race event is getting closer!
Our journey to discover the arenas hosting the five stages continues. Today, we stop at Lago dei Caprioli in Valpiana, arguably the most scenic arena of the entire event. Here, the race unfolds around an alpine lake nestled between coniferous forests and wide clearings, framed by mountains and a network of paths winding through silence, the scent of resin, and breathtaking views.
The competition area develops around Lago dei Caprioli, a small alpine lake situated at an altitude of approximately 1,280 m, amidst coniferous woods and alpine meadows. It offers an ideal natural backdrop for an orienteering event: forest scenery, clearings, and trails make the terrain varied and fascinating, perfect for both technical and physical challenges.

Although created in the 1960s as an artificial basin, the lake is perfectly integrated into the landscape and has become a landmark for hikers, families, and outdoor enthusiasts.
The arena fits into a context of woodland paths, pastures, and clearings. The courses weave through fir trees and meadows, offering diverse terrain types for the races: from homogeneous undergrowth to the gentle slopes of the basin, reaching the more open areas towards Valpiana.
One of the area’s characteristic features is the “Sentiero degli Gnomi” (Path of the Gnomes), a themed trail full of natural sculptures connecting the valley floor to the lake—perfect for families to explore after a race in the woods.
Lago dei Caprioli is accessible by car from Pellizzano or via hiking trails. Near the banks, you will find picnic areas, a mountain hut (rifugio), and a visitor center: this makes the race arena not only a technical venue but also a welcoming place for spectators and staff.

Why it’s perfect for orienteering:
- Varied terrain with woods, meadows, and forest tracks.
- Gentle but technical slopes near Valpiana.
- A natural scenic viewpoint surrounding the water.
- Accessibility and support areas for staff and the public.
All these elements combine to make Valpiana – Lago dei Caprioli an evocative and stimulating arena for Stages 3 and 4, capable of testing both navigation skills and physical endurance in an authentic alpine setting.
Get ready! And see you in a few months.
